Bakgrund: Den kraftiga ökningen av diabetes typ 2 globalt har en stark koppling till övervikt och medför flera komplikationer dessutom leder diabetes årligen till cirka 1,6 miljoner dödsfall. På patientnivå medför detta ofta känslomässigt lidande i samband med egenvården. Detta leder även till en ökad belastning för vårdpersonalen, särskilt sjuksköterskor inom primärvården, som har en viktig roll i att vägleda patienter och främja förebyggande vårdinsatser.

Syftet: Att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att vårda patienter med diabetes typ 2 i primärvården. 

Metod: En litteraturöversikt med kvalitativ design genomfördes. Tolv vetenskapliga artiklar inkluderades. Data insamlades ifrån databaserna Cinahl och Medline och analyserades utifrån Fribergs fem analyssteg.

Resultat: I resultatet framkom två teman: Utmaningar i vården av patienter med diabetes typ 2 och omständigheter som berör vården av patienter med diabetes typ 2. Sex sub-teman identifierades: att möta omotiverade patienter, att få tiden att räcka till, att sakna självförtroende vid egenvårdsrådgivning, att anpassa kommunikationen till patientens behov, att anpassa vården efter patientens färdighet och teamets betydelse inom diabetesvården. 

Slutsats: Sjuksköterskor upplevade både möjligheter och utmaningar i vården av patienter med diabetes typ 2. Att anpassa vården och kommunikationen efter patienters behov var en viktig del av sjuksköterskors arbete och det uppstod hinder när patienter saknade motivation och vilja till egen vård. När sjuksköterskor inte hade tillräckligt med tid eller kunskap till att kunna svara på patienters frågor skapades osäkerhet hos sjuksköterskorna. 

Background: The significant increase in type 2 diabetes globally is strongly linked to obesity and leads to various complications, in addition diabetes resulting in approximately 1,6 million deaths annually. On a patient level, the consequences involve emotional suffering, when managing the disease and maintaining good self-care. Furthermore, there is an increased burden on healthcare professionals, especially nurses in primary care, to guide patients and promote effective preventive healthcare measures. 

Aim: The aim was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for patients with type 2 diabetes in primary care.

Method: A qualitative literature review approach was used. Twelve scientific articles were selected. The data were collected from the Cinahl and Medline databases and analyzed using Friberg's five analytical steps.  

Results: The results presented two main themes: Challenges in the care of patients with type 2 diabetes and circumstances affecting the care of patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, six sub-themes were identified: to meet unmotivated patients, struggling to find enough time, lacking confidence in providing self-care advice, adapting communication to the patients' needs, tailoring care to the patients' abilities, and the importance of the team in diabetes care. 

Conclusion: Nurses experienced both opportunities and challenges in the care of patients with diabetes type 2. Adapting care and communication to patients' needs was an important part of the nurse's work, and obstacles arose when patients lacked motivation and willingness for self-care. When nurses did not have enough time or knowledge to answer patients' questions, uncertainty was created among the nurses.
