Living with type 1 diabetes mellitus: adolescents´experiences : A Qualitative Literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Type 1-diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a widespread chronic disease and affects approximately 650 children and adolescents a year in Sweden. Developing T1DM entails significant lifestyle changes, such as meticulous blood glucose monitoring and regular insulin injections, as well as an increased risk of psychological distress. Nurses play a key role in supporting individuals with T1DM in their daily lives.
Aim: The aim was to explore how adolescents experience living with a T1DM diagnosis. Method: The literature review was based on twelve scientific articles using qualitative research methods that were published between 2015-2024. The articles were retrieved from the databases CINAHL and MEDLINE and analyzed using Friberg's analysis model. Results: Two themes were identified: Type 1-diabetes mellitus – Psychological and psychosocial impact and balancing daily life with T1DM. The first theme included two subthemes, and the second theme included three subthemes. The result revealed feelings of shame, exclusion and anxiety related to their disease. Stigma and misunderstanding were prevalent, and many expressed a desire for normality. Conclusion: Living with T1DM during adolescence contributed with feelings of social exclusion, restricted freedom and difficulties balancing adolescent life with the demands of the disease. Support from friends, family and healthcare professionals were essential for helping adolescents feel more secure in their T1DM and to facilitate the transition toward greater independence in self-care.
