When everything changes : Parents' experiences when their child received a cancer diagnosis - A Qualitative Review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Every year, 350 children are diagnosed with cancer in Sweden, of which 85% survive. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, the entire family is affected. The parents undergo a significant emotional challenge, where nurses play an important role. By applying family-centered care, the needs and resources of the entire family are recognized.

Aim: The aim was to describe parents' experiences when their child received a cancer diagnosis.

Method: Qualitative method with an inductive approach. The searches were conducted in Cinahl and Medline, resulting in 12 relevant articles that were analyzed using Friberg's five-step model.

Result: The result is presented in two themes and six subthemes. (1) Support from the environment with subthemes: care with competence, lack of support, and family bonds that are affected. (2) Emotions that influence with subthemes: guilt and inadequacy, fear of loss, and faith and hope for the future.

Conclusion: Families where a child is affected by cancer are put in a difficult and complex emotional situation. The nurse works closest to the family and has the main responsibility for providing good care to patients and their whole family. Therefore, it is important that the nurse has the right knowledge and an open approach where co-creative care exists.
