Make Campaigning Political Again : A Quantitative Content Analysis of the American Presidential Election 2024 on TikTok (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Leading up to the American presidential election of 2024, Kamala D Harris has taken over from Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate, while Donald J Trump is running for the Republican Party. On the social media platform TikTok, both party candidates have created new campaigning accounts under the usernames: @KamalaHQ and @TeamTrump. This study aims to examine the presidential candidates’ campaign accounts on the platform during the intense final month leading up to the election in 2024. The purpose of the study is to explore the engagement strategies for each account, their adaptation to the platform’s technical features, and the content posted in relation to a world shaped by the merging of politics and entertainment. By analyzing their use of the platform through a quantitative content analysis, the study will provide insights to the direction of the constantly evolving political communication landscape and how it manifests on the social media platform TikTok during a U.S. presidential election. The findings reveal that the use of the platform differs with @TeamTrump utilizing its features more effectively than @KamalaHQ. The content on both accounts tends to emphasize entertainment aspects, contributing to a loss of focus on political content. This result demonstrates an adaptation to a politainment-driven approach to politics, which may cause voters to lose a political perspective when making decisions on election day.
