Get your head in the game : A quantitative content analysis of male characters in games (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how the male characters in computer games are portrayed and whether they give a varied image of men and masculinity. Previous research suggests that people are influenced by what they see in media contexts and that computer games have a greater impact due to their interactivity. Game characters are generally portrayed based on stereotypes, which can affect the player negatively and contribute to negative stereotypes in society. Researchers have been able to see a certain improvement regarding diversity, but that there is room for development. Based on theories about social representations and masculinity, the results of the study are discussed. The result showed that the portrayal of hegemonic masculinity occurs often, but other masculinities also occur. Stereotypes also occur frequently regarding different masculinities and ethnicities, while certain stereotypes are challenged. There is some diversity among the game characters in terms of masculinity, ethnicity, and portrayal, but this study also shows that there is room for improvement
