Scroll for change : A qualitative content analysis of how charity organizations communicate on TikTok towards Generation Z. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines how charitable organizations communicate externally on TikTok to reach Generation Z. The focus is on exploring the rhetorical strategies employed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to encourage donations and engagement. Additionally, the study investigates how these organizations utilize TikTok’s format and features to convey their messages. This is done using the framework of social media logic combined with rhetorical strategies. The research was conducted through a qualitative content analysis of six TikTok posts from the two organizations’ accounts. The results show that the organizations predominantly use emotional appeals, with negative appeals, such as guilt and fear, being the most prominent strategy, particularly in connection with calls for specific actions or behaviour changes. Furthermore, the findings reveal that the organizations rarely employ direct requests for financial contributions. Instead, they prioritize calls for various actions or behavioural changes among viewers.
