Do large Swedish companies dare to communicate sustainability? : A thematic study on sustainable marketing communication linked to large companies in Sweden (English)
Abstract [en]

There is a problem today in that large Swedish companies do not dare to communicate sustainability for fear of being accused of greenwashing. This leads to the phenomenon of greenhushing and pending sustainability communication, which this study intends to research further. Withholding sustainability communication can lead to the work for continued sustainable transition coming to a standstill. In addition, it may have an impact on consumers' willingness to make sustainable choices. The purpose of the study is to investigate how well anchored the sustainability strategies are with the companies' marketing communications and how they frame their sustainability strategies in the marketing communications.

This study has investigated six large Swedish companies, Scandic, IKEA, Klarna, Spotify, ICA Gruppen and Telia Company. Furthermore, the study has analyzed the companies' latest sustainability reports to investigate whether the sustainability strategies appear in the companies' marketing communications. The analysis has used Framing Theory to investigate and answer the questions. The method applied is thematic analysis with an abductive approach. The identified frames from the sustainability reports have related to market communication, which the study limited to the companies' websites and YouTube.

The result shows that the sustainability strategies are largely anchored in the market communication among the large Swedish companies analyzed. However, with the help of the theoretical framework, the study can distinguish a certain consumer framing in communication that is common to all large companies.
