Baptism as a gateway to community and identity : A qualitative study on the significance of baptism for Greek Cypriot identity and community (English)
Abstract [en]

This paper aims to examine the meaning of baptism for Greek Cypriots. It will explore how baptism, beyond being a sacrament in Christianity, plays a central role in shaping identity and fostering a sense of community within the Greek Cypriot population.

Baptism, one of the core sacraments in Christianity, is practiced across all Christian denominations and has deep historical roots. Given the close connection between religion and identity in Cyprus, this paper aims to investigate how baptism functions beyond a mere religious rite, becoming an important cultural practice that reinforces communal ties among Greek Cypriots. Through a historical lens, the study also examines the origins and development of the Orthodox Church on Cyprus and its essential role in shaping local traditions, particularly baptism. By focusing on the Greek Orthodox tradition, the study highlights the ritual's deep theological implications, including the belief that baptism not only symbolizes spiritual rebirth but also signifies the individual’s formal entry into the Christian community.

The study is built on interviews and previous research to explore how baptism strengthens ties within the Greek Cypriot community, particularly in a socio-political context that has been historically marked by division. Additionally, the paper reflects on the complex interplay between faith, identity, cultural continuity, and community. By examining these elements, the study provides insights into the continuing importance of baptism for both individual identity and broader communal connection within the Greek Cypriot society.
