Is the hero a girl? : A quantitative content analysis of the gender representation in two Swedish newspapers reporting of the Olympics 2004 in comparison with the Olympics 2024 (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The Olympic games is a mega-event which takes up a large amount of space in the news reporting during the weeks it takes place. At the same time, sport is a topic which has a great role both in popular culture and in society. Studies about news reporting of the Olympic games, in a Swedish context, is limited. The aim of this study is therefore to examine the news reporting of Swedish newspapers during the Olympic games of 2004 and 2024 from a gender perspective, mainly focusing on analyzing the amount of coverage of the main characters of the news articles and how they are addressed and framed.

The previous research that is presented is covering journalism, sports journalism, the representation of women and men within news reporting and masculinity and femininity in sports. It shows how women are underrepresented in the reporting of sports, and that there are differences regarding how female and male athletes are described. The differences are described to be visible for example through more frequently framing men as heroes, or women often being addressed as girls. Furthermore, it appears that the reporting of sports has developed and is more equal today. This study was carried out using a theoretical framework consisting of gender theory, gender contract and framing theory. The method used is quantitative content analysis, where 150 news articles from each Olympic game was analyzed.

The results of the study did not show any differences between the genders regarding the amount of coverage they get in the news reporting of sports. Regarding how men and women are addressed in the news articles, there wasn´t any differences either. It was showed that the framing of gender marking of sports was more used 2024 for both genders. Generally, the result shows that it was equal between the genders in 2004 and that it still is in 2024.
