Introduktion: Tandvårdssituationer kan vara utmanande för barn, vilket gör kommunikationen mellan barn och tandvårdspersonal mycket viktig. I Sverige talar många barn arabiska som modersmål, vilket kan medföra ytterligare kommunikationsutmaningar. Bildstöd kan vara ett effektivt hjälpmedel för att underlätta kommunikation. Klinisk erfarenhet och forskning inom denna målgrupp är begränsad.

Syfte: Studiens syfte är att beskriva hur arabisktalande barn mellan 6–11 år upplever bildstöd som kommunikativt hjälpmedel och om detta underlättar förberedelse och genomförande av tandvårdsundersökning. 

Metod: Kvalitativa intervjuer genomfördes våren 2024 med ett strategiskt urval av 10 arabisktalande barn varav fem var flickor, 7–11 år. Data analyserades med tematisk analys (Kjellström, 2023; Braun & Clark, 2006).

Resultat: Barnen upplevde att bildstödet var till hjälp vid tandvårdsundersökningen. Analysen resulterade i två huvudteman: ”bildstöd som kommuniktativt stöd i förberedelse och genomförande av tandvårdsundersökning” och ”bildstöd för motivation och möjliggörande av tandvårdsundersökning”. Inom dessa teman inkluderades bland annat barnens känslor som nervositet, lättnad, dess förväntningar och förståelse. 

Konklusion: Bildstöd förbättrar förståelsen och kommunikationen för arabisktalande barn vid tandvårdsundersökningar.

Implikationer: Användning av bildstöd i allmäntandvården kan förbättra kommunikationen och förståelsen mellan tandvårdspersonal och barn, särskilt för barn med kommunikationssvårigheter, och bidra till barnets motivation att vara engagerad i sin egen vård.

Introduction: Dental situations can be challenging for children, which makes communication between children and dental professionals very important. In Sweden, many children speak Arabic as their mother tongue, which can create additional communication challenges. Pictorial support can be an effective aid to facilitate communication. Clinical experience and research within this target group is limited. 

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to describe how arabic-speaking children between 6–11 years experience pictorial support as a communicative aid and whether this facilitates the preparation and execution of a dental examination.

Method: Qualitative interviews were conducted in the spring of 2024 with a strategic selection of 10 arabic-speaking children, five of whom were girls, 7–11 years old. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis (Kjellström, 2023; Braun & Clark, 2006).

Results: The children felt that the pictorial supports were helpful during the dental examination. The analysis resulted in two main themes: "image support as commutative support in the preparation and implementation of the dental examination" and "image support for motivation and enabling of the dental examination". Within these themes, among other things were the children's feelings such as nervousness, relief, their expectations and understanding included.

Conclusion: Pictorial support improves comprehension and communication for arabic-speaking children during dental examinations.

Implications: The use of pictorial support in general dentistry can improve communication and understanding between dental professionals and children, especially for children with communication difficulties, and increase children's engagement in their own care.
