From Task to Learning : A Content Analysis of Assignements in Civics Textbooks in Upper Secondary School (English)
Abstract [sv]

olika ämnesområden i samhällskunskap?

Abstract [en]

This study examines the types of skills and knowledge expressed in the tasks found in

Swedish upper secondary school social studies textbooks. The aim is to contribute to un-

derstanding how these tasks support the development of the competencies emphasized in

the national curriculum (Gy11), guided by two research questions: (1) What learning ob-

jects are articulated in textbook tasks in social studies? And (2) How are these learning

objects distributed across different subject areas within social studies?

A content analysis of 3,007 tasks from six textbooks was conducted using Bloom’s revised

taxonomy, which also serves as the study’s theoretical framework.

The result show that the majority of tasks are situated at a low cognitive level, primarily

focusing on understanding factual knowledge. In line with previous research, this suggest

that many tasks do not fully align with the curriculum’s intention to foster higher-order

cognitive skills. However, the presence of some tasks at higher cognitive level indicates

future potential. Tasks at the highest levels of cognitive remain rare. The study concludes

that future textbook design, as well as any potential revisions, should feature a broader

variety of learning objects. Moreover, if such variation is lacking, more deliberate didactic

choices by teachers are required to better support the competencies promoted by the cur-

riculum.
