Digital technology and its impact on participation in society among older adults (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The use of digital technology affects how activities are carried out, which can create obstacles or opportunities för older people´s participation in society. The aim of the study was to explore how participation in society is affected by digital technology, with a focus on older adults aged 65–79. The study is based on a qualitative method with an inductive approach. To recruit older people, a convenience sample was used, and nine interviews were conducted. The results show that digital participation among individuals aged 65–79 varies depending on previous experience, interest, and support from their environment. Those who have used digital technology in their work life find it easier to adapt, while others perceive digital technology as difficult. Conclusion the study shows that digital technology can increase older adults' social participation, provide access to local and global information, and enable the use of important public services, which in turn promotes engagement and inclusion. Implications: The thesis can illuminate how digital technology affects participation in society and how occupational therapists can apply this to their work.
