Child Health Service nurses' experiences of supporting families with a prematurely born child : A qualitative interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Summary
Background: An increasing number of children born prematurely survive, but they often face both physical and psychological challenges that affect the entire family. Child Health Service nurses have an important role in supporting these families, while also requiring greater knowledge and understanding in order to provide adequate support.
Aim: The purpose of the study was to describe Child Health Service nurses' experiences of supporting families with a prematurely born child, born before 32 weeks of pregnancy.
Method: The study was conducted as a qualitative interview study with an inductive approach. A total of 11 specialist nurses working in Child Health Service were included.
Result: The interview material resulted in three main findings; The importance of the encounter with the family, The significance of parental support and The importance of supporting family involvement and cooperation in healthcare. The Child Health Service nurses felt that the first meeting established the foundation for a good relationship and individualized support for the entire family. At the same time, challenges related to supporting the prematurely born child were highlighted.
Conclusion: The study shows that Child Health Service nurses play a central role in supporting families of prematurely born children through individualized, family-centered care that promotes the well-being of both parents and children. Due to limited experience and unclear clinical guidelines, the nurses experienced limitations in their work, highlighting the need for enhanced training and clearer directives.
