Those who lived : A microhistorical study of the city of Ternopil during the Holocaust from the survivors' perspective (English)
Abstract [en]

The key features of history as a scientific field are that it portrays the events of the past and explains why those events panned out. However, due to scientific and societal norms, the production has led to a plethora of simplistic and one-sided versions of history, which focus on the leaders of the nations rather than the people. An event such as the Holocaust is an event that affected millions of people throughout the globe, and to try and understand the events in more detail, a microhistorical approach as well as a theoretical framework was applied. By using survivor testimonies as well as written memoirs of survivors and inhabitants of the city of Ternopil, a version of the events of the Holocaust can be portrayed. Via the application of the method of oral history and the lenses of microhistory, the events of the Holocaust, through the stories of the survivors who lived in Ternopil during the events, produce a nuanced insight into the events. It also allows individuals to be heard and have their stories told. The stories that are told not only give a sequence of events, but they also give an insight into the societal structures of the town during the time. The stories reveal to what lengths people will go to survive, how much people risk helping others, and how psychologically draining losing loved ones can be. The subjective nature of the sources also allows for an understanding of attitudes and reactions as well as thoughts on the events that took place in Ternopil during the time it was occupied and controlled by Nazi-Germany as well as the Soviet Union, which is what the result of the study shows. It also shows how complicated and multifaceted the events are, where people react differently to events and have different recollections or interpretations of the same events. These findings show how complicated history is since one event, in the eyes and words of individuals who lived it, comes to show how events are not one-sided, but it gains one side for each participant of that event.
