Aging Outside the Norm: A scoping review on LGBTQ+ Individuals’ Experiences of Health and Social Care from a life course perspective (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Introduction: The lack of visibility of older LGBTQ+ individuals impacts their health, and today’s heteronormative healthcare system generates concern about future care needs. Older LGBTQ+ people may feel the need to hide their identity to protect themselves from discrimination or use other strategies to allow the body to remain queer until the end of life. Aim: To examine older LGBTQ+ individuals’ experiences of health and social care services. Method: A scoping review based on the five-step framework by Arksey & O’Malley. Searches were conducted in Cinahl, PsycInfo and Pubmed. Results: Thirty-one articles were identified based on the inclusion criteria. Five main themes emerged: When healthcare fails to see the whole person, a future that may not include everyone, social isolation, returning to the closet, and being rendered invisible in healthcare. Conclusion: Many older LGBTQ+ individuals have past experiences of discrimination within health and social care and also bear concerns about future care needs. Various strategies are used by queer individuals to navigate the heteronormative care system. There is a need for future research into the actual lived experiences of the “older old” population, as well as a deeper understanding of the diverse needs within the heterogeneous LGBTQ+ community.
