I takt med en att befolkningen åldras förändras behoven inom välfärdssamhället, vilket medför nya demografiska utmaningar. En framträdande utveckling är den ökade alkoholkonsumtionen bland äldre, i synnerhet hos kvinnor. När individer vänder sig till samhället för stöd och vård, ryms de inte alltid inom de traditionella ramarna, vilket gör att de riskerar att falla mellan stolarna. Denna utveckling ställer krav inom äldreomsorgen både vad gäller arbetsmiljö och kunskap för att kunna arbeta på ett individanpassat sätt. Studien syftar till att undersöka personals erfarenheter av könsintegrerade boenden för äldre med beroendeproblematik, med särskilt fokus på utmaningar, möjligheter, strategier samt hur personalen beskriver kvinnors beroendeproblematik och behov. Studien bygger på semistrukturerade intervjuer och materialet har analyserats genom tematisk analys. Resultatet visar kvinnors beroendeproblematik uppfattas som mer komplex med trauman och samsjuklighet, däremot bidrar deras närvaro till en mjukare atmosfär inom dessa boendemiljöer. Personalen upplever även en brist på könsspecifik kompetensutveckling som en utmaning, vilket blir en utmaning då det idag finns kunskapsluckor. Trots denna utmaning har personal genom erfarenhet utvecklat strategier och metoder för att möta medarbetarnas behov, bland annat genom att göra en bakgrundkoll för att identifiera eventuella varningssignaler, behov och triggers.

Title: Gender integration in residential care for the elderly with a focus on substance abuse: Staff perspectives on opportunities, challenges and practices.

As the population ages, the need within the welfare society are changing, which brings new demographic challenges. A prominent development is the increased alcohol consumption among the elderly, especially among women. When individuals turn to society for support and care, they do not always fit within the traditional framework, which means that they risk falling through the cracks. This development places demands on elderly care in terms of both the work environment and knowledge in order to be able to work in an individually adapted way. The study aims to investigate staff experiences of gender-integrated housing for elderly with addiction problems, with a particular focus on challenges, opportunities, strategies and how staff describe women’s addiction problems and needs. The study is based on semi-structured interviews and the material has been analyzed through thematic analysis. The results show that women’s addiction problems are perceived as more complex with trauma and comorbidity, but their presence contributes to a softer atmosphere within these living environments. Staff also experience a lack of gender-specific skills development as a challenge, which becomes a challenge as there are currently knowledge gaps. Despite this challenge, staff have developed strategies and methods through experience to meet the needs of employees, including by conducting a background check to identify any warning signs, needs and triggers.
