Abstract [en]

This thesis explores peacebuilding in post-conflict societies through a comparative study of Bosnia and Herzegovina following the Dayton Agreement (1995) and Colombia after the 2016 Peace Accord with FARC. Despite differing in contexts, both cases offer insights on the complexities of building sustainable peace. The research asks how the peacebuilding strategies and key factors in each agreement have influenced post-conflict stability, and what lessons can be drawn to inform future peace processes. Building on the peacebuilding theories of Galtung (1969), Lederach (1997, and Ramsbotham, Woodhouse, and Miall (2016), the study explores the contrast negative peace-defined as the absence of violence, with positive peace, which involves justice, inclusion, and reconciliation. Using a qualitative and comparative case study approach, it combines thematic analysis with ten semi-structured interviews conducted with individuals directly affected by each peace process. The findings show that while the Dayton Agreement ended direct violence, it also reinforced ethnic divisions and led to institutional fragmentation. In contrast, Colombia’s peace accord aimed at structural reform but has faced persistent violence and  inconsistent implementation. The research emphasizes that sustainable peace extends beyond formal agreements, relying on local agency, psychosocial healing, and the transformation of the structures that sustain conflict. This thesis,  although limited in scope, highlights a persistent gap between national peace frameworks and everyday lived experiences, providing practical insights for fostering more inclusive and transformative peacebuilding.
