Teachers' perspectives on teaching two-dimensional geometric figures. (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Geometric figures are a central component of geometry education and are described as a challenging area within mathematics. Previous research highlights various aspects of how teachers can plan instruction to support students’ understanding of geometric figures. The purpose of this study is to illuminate teachers’ descriptions of how instruction can be designed to develop students’ knowledge of two-dimensional geometric figures. To achieve this aim, research questions were formulated focusing on the content students encounter and how teachers describe and justify their instructional choices. The empirical data were collected through seven semi-structured interviews with practicing teachers in grades F–3. The results show that teaching about two-dimensional geometric figures often follows a linear structure, with a focus on the figures: rectangle, square, circle, and equilateral triangle. Teachers describe and justify their choices in various ways. Conceptual understanding is emphasized as central, and comparison between figures is described as an important component in supporting students’ learning. To promote this, concrete materials are used, which, according to the teachers, help reinforce concepts and facilitate comparisons. Furthermore, the teachers’ descriptions of instruction are discussed in relation to previous research and sociocultural theory. The study contributes insights into different didactic choices that may influence how students are given opportunities to develop geometric understanding.
