Children's rights in practice : An ethnographic study of how a non-profit children's rights organization combats exclusion in a socio-economically disadvantaged area (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study explores how a non-profit children's rights organization in a socio-economically disadvantaged area in Sweden promotes social inclusion, equal opportunities, and meaningful participation for children and youth. Through an ethnographic approach combining participant observation and semi-structured interviews, the study investigates how the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are translated into practice.

Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological theory, the analysis highlights how the organization fosters the accumulation of social and cultural capital among youth, providing them with recognition, safety, and long-term support. The findings reveal that the organization actively challenges structural inequality and social exclusion by creating inclusive spaces, supporting empowerment, and responding to gendered and local needs. The study emphasizes the complementary role of civil society in welfare provision and the importance of rights-based community work in marginalized contexts.
