“We Don’t Just Read – We think Individually and Together” : Reading Comprehension Strategies in Reading in Group and Individual Reading in Grades 1-3 (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

International assessment, such as the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), show a decline in reading comprehension skills among Swedish students. Reading comprehension strategies can serve as support for students’ active interpretation and understanding of texts. The aim of this study is therefore to contribute knowledge about how active Swedish language teachers in grades 1–3 describes their work with reading comprehension strategies in both reading in group and individual reading contexts, as well as what opportunities and challenges they experience with these strategies.

The study is grounded in aspects of sociocultural theory of cognitive development, drawing on the concepts of tools, mediation, and in the zone of proximal development. Empirical data was collected through qualitative interviews with six practicing Swedish teachers in grades 1-3, distributed across six schools in three different municipalities.

The results show that reading comprehension strategies are perceived as important tools for developing active, engaged and independent readers. Reading in group and individual reading should not be viewed as two separate forms, but rather as interconnected components of reading comprehension strategies instruction. The most prominent opportunity identified in the results is students’ improved reading comprehension through the application of such strategies. However, challenges also emerged, particularly regarding the time and conditions required to implement these strategies effectively in both reading in group and individual reading situations.
