When pupils find joy in writing : A qualitative study of how writing tools and support structures affect pupils’ attitudes toward and development of writing in grades 1-3 (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
This qualitative study explores how pupils in grades 1-3 say that they are influenced by digital and analog writing tools and various support structures during the writing education. The aim of the study is to highlight how these elements support pupil’s writing development within the subject of Swedish. The study adopts a pupil perspective and draws on semi-structured focus group interviews with eight pupils from three Swedish schools. The study is based on The Not So Simple View of Writing, parts of the sociocultural perspective and related concepts that shed light on pupils’ recollections about their thinking during writing. The results show that digital writing tools can facilitate the writing process and help pupils focus more on the content of their texts. This is due to the availability of digital aids such as spell checkers and speech synthesis. However, several pupils felt that they remembered what they had written more clearly when they wrote analogically, which may be because handwriting activates the body, senses and brain. The study also highlights the importance of teacher and peer support in the writing process. Pupils also expressed that their enjoyment of writing is influenced by collaboration, independence and enjoyable choice of subject. Finally, the results feature the importance of finding a balance between using digital and analog writing tools in writing education. The choice of writing tools should therefore be adapted to the subject and learning objectives, and not least, to pupil’s individual needs.
