Carry the Forest: Designing a Bag for Forestry Machine Operators

Abstract [en]
Forestry machine operators often need to transport both personal and work-relateditems between home and the cabin daily. These users face practical challenges due to alack of organization, poor insulation for food and drinks and limited space within themachine.This master’s thesis explores the design of a multifunctional backpack for forestrymachine operators using user-centered research methods such as questionnaire,mock-ups, user testing or material analysis. The design process followed the DoubleDiamond methodology, where three iterations were conducted. The development andrefine of the concept were achieve by iterating through ideation, prototyping, and testingto translate the user insights into practical design features.The research identified key user needs: compartmentalization, durability, comfort andcompatibility with the cabin space, which were all integrated into the backpack design.The final backpack design includes modular compartments, waterproof and insulatingmaterials, and ergonomic features suited for harsh forestry environments and theoperator’s needs. It improves organization of the user, protects contents and adapts tothe specific challenges users face.The project was developed in collaboration with Terri AB Skogmaskiner and supports thecompany’s brand identity through a strategic use of colour and materials.
