Creative Writing in the Swedish Subject – Not Just a “Bit of Fun”? : A Qualitative Focus Group Study on Upper Secondary Teachers’ Views on Creative Writing as Part of the Educational Mission of the Swedish Subject. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study investigates upper secondary school teachers’ perceptions of creative writing as part of the mission of the Swedish subject in connection to the implementation of Gy25. Through a focus group interview with six Swedish subject teachers, the study explores how creative writing is understood, practiced, and conceptualized in relation to the Swedish school’s knowledge objectives and core values. The material is subjected to thematic analysis and discussed with reference to Gert Biesta’s (2020) three functions of education – qualification, socialization, and subjectification – as well as speculative methodology and the concept of ‘not-yetness’ (Ross, 2023).

The result shows that creative writing is associated with several pedagogical values, but its potential is not always realized in practice. A recurring theme is the need to clarify the purpose of creative writing tasks, for both teachers and students, as a prerequisite for meaningful learning and for the writing to fulfill its role as an aesthetic learning process. The findings also reveal that creative writing is perceived as a versatile tool that can contribute to language development, identity formation, and ethical reflection. At the same time, there is uncertainty about how this type of writing should be structured, taught, and assessed. In conclusion, the study shows that creative writing can be more than just a “bit of fun” – it can serve as a vital component of students’ language development, value formation, and personal educational journey. The result provides a foundation for further research on how creative writing can be implemented and developed in the Swedish subject in accordance with Gy25.
