This study explores how Swedish teachers in upper secondary school understand and work with the idea of Bildung in the Swedish subject. The new curriculum Gy25 highlights the importance of Bildung, but what does it mean in daily teaching? Interviews with six teachers show that Bildung is seen as a process where students develop their own voice, learn to think critically, and understand both themselves and others. These aspects are also linked to the core principles of democracy: the ability to think critically, understand others, and participate in society. However, teachers face challenges such as time pressure, grading focus, and limited support. The study shows that Bildung often takes place in Swedish classes – even if it is not always referred to by name.
