"The book is not something just to be read, but experienced together" : A qualitative study of teacher-led dialogic read alouds from the perspective of five teachers (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Teacher-led dialogic read-alouds is highlighted in both curriculum documents and research as an instructional approach to promote students’ language comprehension and vocabulary development. Despite this, the approach does not always appear to be an integral part of teaching in Swedish and Swedish as a second language. The purpose of this study is to contribute with didactic knowledge about how teacher-led dialogic read-alouds can strengthen students’ language. The purpose of the study is addressed through two research questions: How do teachers perceive that teacher-led dialogic read-alouds affect students’ vocabulary development? How do teachers perceive that an improved vocabulary can enhance students’ ability to retell? A qualitative method is used in the form of semi-structured interviews with four teachers working in grades F–3 in primary school, as well as one language specialist working with grades F–1 and after-school care. The study is based on a sociocultural perspective, where the theory is described as a social and interactive process between people, in which individuals construct their knowledge together and with support from others within the zone of proximal development. The results show that teachers perceive that teacher-led dialogic read-alouds develop students’ vocabulary, and that an improved vocabulary strengthens their ability to retell. Reading the book multiple times, along with the frequent use of new words in conversation, contributes to a linguistically secure learning environment, which in turn promotes students' active participation and their ability to express themselves more nuancedly. Teacher’s engagement, support, and teaching in meaningful contexts appear to be crucial factors for developing students' language comprehension.
