Waste minimization measures (English)
Abstract [sv]
avfallsmängderna i byggproduktionen.
byggprocessen.
Abstract [en]
Introduction – Construction and demolition waste accounts for a large part of Sweden's
total waste, which negatively affects both the environment and the country's resources.
Despite current laws and guidelines, waste management and minimization are
insufficient. The study is being carried out together with NCC Jönköping and aims to
investigate which materials generate the most waste, the reasons for this and what
measures can reduce waste quantities in construction production.
Method – The study has been mainly carried out qualitatively with empirical data
collected through document studies of NCC's waste statistics. In addition, the method
of semi-structured interviews with site managers and observations on construction sites
has been carried out.
Results – The three largest waste fractions are identified as wood, concrete and scrap
metal. Wood mainly through temporary structures and packaging, concrete through
over-ordering and scrap metal through spillage.
Analysis – Explanations and interpretations from the results of the document study,
observations and interviews are presented here. Empiricism highlights that material
waste, the use of special dimensions and safety margins in the form of surplus orders
are among the main causes of large amounts of waste. It also come forth that material
handling and lack of time are central problems in waste reduction work. Furthermore,
the study shows that waste minimization is often given low priority, and that the attitude
towards the issue is weak. The work draws attention to the importance of working
towards waste minimization at an early stage, as well as the need for clearer
communication between design and production.
Discussion – The results of the study are supported by previous research. The
implications show that it is cheaper to throw away than to recycle, which shows that the
construction industry is not in line with environmental goals. In addition, the focus on
the environmental issue is not considered personal and therefore ranks lower compared
to safety, for example. That a limited number of people with the same site manager role
and in the NCC Southeast area, Large projects Skaraborg can affect the generalizability
of the study. Also, the observations were only made on one occasion for each project,
which only provides a snapshot of one stage in the construction process.
