From neutrality to necessity: the language that shaped Sweden’s NATO membership : A discourse analysis of how safety, threat, security, and responsibility are constructed in Swedish media discourse during the NATO accession process (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In the spring of 2022, Sweden’s application to join NATO was presented as both logical and inevitable. But how did it come to be seen that way? This study explores how the concepts of safety, threat, security and responsibility were articulated in Swedish media discourse during the intense period from January to September 2022, and how language helped shape the boundaries of security policy. Through a critical discourse analysis of 90 editorial articles from three national newspapers, we show how certain understandings of security are presented as natural, reasonable and necessary, while alternative perspectives are silenced or marginalized. NATO is framed as the obvious solution to an overarching threat, while voices advocating diplomacy or questioning militarization are portrayed as unrealistic or irresponsible.

The analysis draws on securitization theory (Copenhagen School), Laclau & Mouffe’s discourse theory and Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis. Our results reveal how affect, moralization and repetition not only shape the content of the discourse, but define the very limits of what is perceived as politically possible. At a time of geopolitical transformation, it is not only decisions that shape the future, but also the language used to justify them.
