Leadership in hybrid workplaces : A qualitative study on how managers adapt their leadership and foster trust in a hybrid workplace (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic the Public Health Agency of Sweden recommended that all employers should allow their employees to work remotely. In the post-pandemic period, hybrid work – a model that combines on-site and remote work – has become the new normal. This work model places new demands on managers and creates challenges in their leadership. However, there is a lack of research on how managers adapt their leadership and foster trust in employees within hybrid workplaces.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how managers adapt their leadership in hybrid workplaces.

Method: The study applies a qualitative research strategy with a deductive approach and a case study as the research design. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using a thematic analysis. The analysis resulted in two main themes: leadership adaptation in hybrid workplaces and fostering trust in hybrid workplaces. These themes were analyzed based on the study´s theoretical framework, which led to the development of a model that summarizes the conclusions.

Conclusion: Managers adapt their leadership in hybrid workplaces through communication, availability and a structured approach. Trust in employees is fostered through non-controlling leadership, open and dialogical communication, and clearly defined roles and responsibilities.
