The rainbow in the cis-heteronormative shadow : A qualitative interview study on Swedish organizations’ work with violence in LGBTQI+ people’s relationships (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

LGBTQI+ people are subjected to similar or higher rates of intimate partner violence than heterosexual women and men, but the Swedish support systems for victims of violence rarely targets towards LGBTQI+ people. Previous research shows that LGBTQI+ people who are victims of intimate partner violence are met with inadequate support and heteronormative presumptions of what violence is. The purpose of this study is to investigate how heteronormativity affects Swedish non-profit organizations, social services and municipalities who work with intimate partner violence, thus meeting or working with LGBTQI+ victims of violence. Furthermore, the purpose is to examine which factors affect the work with LGBTQI+ victims of violence in Sweden. Finally, we seek to understand which routines and measures develop the work with LGBTQI+ people who are victims of intimate partner violence. The study has been conducted through semi-structured qualitative interviews with professionals, drawing conclusions from the queer theoretical framework. The results show that there are substantial flaws in the work of Swedish organizations who meet LGBTQI+ victims of partner violence, due to a lack of competence and education among the working professionals and within the organizations. Furthermore, the study highlights that heteronormative assumptions are deeply rooted in the organizations, which can marginalize LGBTQI+ victims of violence.
