Emission-reduced asphalt paving: fuel consumption, environmental impact and economic cost (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction (and aim) – To limit the greenhouse gas emissions from the asphaltproduction, renewable fuels are used in the asphalt plants which reduces the emissionsfrom the manufacturing process. To continue the climate work, also the emissions fromthe paving process need to be reduced. This study investigates how asphalt pavers androllers are used in production, and how their operation and choice of fuel affect boththe economy and the environment. The goal is to map and identify opportunities forimprovement in machine usage and fuel alternatives to guide contractors towardsdeveloping more resource- and climate conscious working methods.

Method – The study is a quantitative case study with elements of qualitative methods.Document analysis and interviews are the data collection techniques used to obtain thestudy's empirical material. List prices of fuels, emission values, and machine data forasphalt pavers and rollers are analysed to examine how their usage impacts theenvironment and economy. The interviews complement the machine data and providea deeper understanding of work methods and challenges in production.

Results – Compiled tables show that asphalt pavers and rollers are used inefficientlyand are primarily powered by MK1 diesel. Switching to HVO100 reduces carbondioxide equivalent emissions caused by fuel combustion by 74 percent compared tousing MK1 diesel. However, HVO100 has a higher purchase price, and using itexclusively would increase total production costs by 0,15 percent. Furthermore, theresults indicate that work methods in production can be improved to reduce bothenvironmental impact and economic cost. Better planning, reduced idling, and clearerguidance on fuel choices would have lowered the environmental impact of theproduction.

Analysis – By compiling the collected numerical data into tables and thematizing thetranscribed interviews, the results could be analysed. The analysis shows that broaderimplementation of HVO100 as a fuel in asphalt pavers and rollers is a simple step thatreduces the environmental impact of production. Furthermore, extended idling periodsneed to be minimized, a long, continuous production stop allows for the paver to beturned off. The roller should be shut down immediately when not in use for compaction.

Discussion – The study’s discussion of results emphasizes that the transport of asphaltmix needs to be optimized through communication between the paving crew andtransport trucks to minimize extended idle periods. Time should be allocated at the startof the workday to plan deliveries and identify longer production stops, allowing thepaver to be turned off. The roller should be shut down when not actively compacting toavoid unnecessary emissions of carbon dioxide equivalents. The study’smethodological discussion highlights both the strengths of the chosen methods and thestudy’s limitations. Suggested improvements include interviewing more industryprofessionals from different stakeholders to enable better generalization of the results.
