Digitalization and Recycling in the Construction Industry: Tools for a Circular Future (English)
Abstract [sv]

Introduktion

Abstract [en]

Introduction

The construction industry is facing major challenges in meeting environmental andsustainability goals, particularly the UN's Agenda 2030. Digitalisation and reuse arehighlighted as key strategies to reduce waste and resource consumption. DespiteSweden’s high level of digital maturity, the construction sector remains one of the leastdigitalised, especially in relation to reuse processes. The aim of this study is toinvestigate how digital tools are used in demolition, deconstruction, and reuse, whatobstacles exist, and how regulations can be adapted to support digitalisation and circularconstruction.

Method

This study is based on a qualitative method, including a literature review, documentanalysis, and semi-structured interviews with four companies active in demolition, waste management, consulting, production, and sustainability. The interviews wereanalysed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns, challenges, anddevelopment opportunities.

Results

Digital tools such as BIM, PLM systems, and CDE platforms are used to varyingdegrees to structure and store information about building materials. Inventory toolsusing RFID and AI are applied to track materials and streamline logistics for reuse. However, usage varies between stakeholders and often lacks full integration across theconstruction process. Respondents identify clear opportunities but highlight insufficientincentives, low digital maturity, and a lack of unified standards as key barriers.

Analysis

The analysis shows strong potential for digitalisation to increase reuse, but practicalbarriers such as insufficient documentation, weak knowledge transfer, and financialconstraints are slowing progress. The lack of marketplaces and standardised workflowsfor reuse creates uncertainty and complicates planning. Achieving change requiressystem integration, enhanced competence, and stronger demands from both clients andauthorities.

Discussion

Digital tools are essential for enabling efficient and sustainable reuse. Despitetechnological advancements, structural conditions for large-scale implementation arestill lacking. A cultural shift around waste, clearer regulations, and financial incentivesare necessary to unlock the full potential of digitalisation. The study highlights theimportance of coordination, clear requirements, and long-term digital workflows tosupport a circular construction sector.
