Abstract [en]

Introduction and aim – This thesis is conducted by two students at Jönköping University of Technology, in collaboration with the consulting company bsv arkitekter & ingenjörer AB. It explores multifunctional buildings from a social perspective. Despite the socially beneficial idea behind multifunctional buildings, they do not always benefit the area in which they are constructed. The aim of this thesis is therefore to confirm or challenge previous research findings of what is required to make an area with multifunctional buildings function well and be perceived as positive. This by testing the previous research findings in a Swedish context.

Method – This thesis applies an explanatory research approach. Data is collected through a questionnaire and interviews. Residents in a multifunctional area are asked to complete the questionnaire while interviews are held with representatives from companies that have experience working with multifunctional buildings. The interviews are held with a variety of people with relevant experience in the subject matter, in order to obtain a broader understanding. The data is analysed using both qualitative and a quantitative approach.

Results – The results show that economic sustainability is of great importance when it comes to the reasons behind the construction of multifunctional buildings. The multifunctional area of Atollen is generally experienced as positive, where the mix of activities is appreciated by the residents of the area. One of the most important factors for a well-functioning multifunctional building is its design, as well as a clear visionand ongoing social efforts.

Analysis – The analysis of the result shows that the economic sustainability is the primary reason for multifunctional buildings being built, but social sustainability is expected to gain increasing importance in the future. Overall, the questionnairerespondents that live in the multifunctional built area Atollen have a generally positive experience, although some feel unsafe in connection with certain establishment in the area. The analysis highlights the importance of a thoughtful building design that encourages interaction, prevents conflict, and is supported by a clear vision and a long-term social work.

Discussion – In this chapter it is discussed whether the aim of this thesis has been achieved. The credibility and applicability of the results are also discussed. The empirical data obtained in this study is compared with existing theories. Finally, the impact of studying only one area, as well as the selection of respondents for the questionnaire and the interviews, is discussed in relation to the outcome of this thesis.
