Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
This thesis examines how an outdoor area adjacent to Arena Skövde can be designed to promote safety, visibility, accessibility, and inclusion among youths aged 15–20.
The background highlights an identified need for public, free, and inclusive meeting places for young people in Skövde, as current options are dominated by paid activities within the arena and the area is otherwise characterized by parking lots and a lack of attractive social spaces. The aim was to identify which factors in the physical environment are perceived as important for creating a safe and inclusive place, to investigate the preferences of young people regarding desired features in the area, and to develop a structural design for the area.
The study is based on a case study using both qualitative and quantitative methods, including a site analysis with the Place Standard Tool, a survey targeting high school students, a literature review, and a workshop with representatives from Skövde Municipality.
The results show that factors such as even and adequate lighting, low and visually permeable vegetation, open areas with good visibility, natural pathways, and access to free activities and flexible seating are central to enhancing the sense of safety and inclusion. Particularly requested features among the youth were green spaces for relaxation, outdoor gyms, more seating, sports and social activity areas, as well as opportunities for events such as concerts and outdoor cinemas.
Professionals from Skövde Municipality emphasize the importance of positioning the requested elements in the area in a way that enhances safety. They also highlight the need for multifunctional use of the features and the creation of spatial flexibility. The developed structural design was designed in dialogue with the municipality’s planners to ensure social sustainability and an evidence-based outcome.
The analysis emphasizes that the placement of functions on the site aims to create visibility and encourage movement across the area, which increases the perceived sense of safety.
Multiple data collection methods were used, and the study’s reliability is strengthened through methodological triangulation. Among the limitations are a relatively small number of respondents and the potential influence of subjective interpretations in the use of the Place Standard Tool.
The study contributes knowledge to municipalities and urban planners on how young people can be included in the design of public environments, and it highlights the importance of collaboration between research, practitioners, and the target group. The thesis concludes with concrete recommendations for the future design of public spaces for youth and suggestions for further research.
