Automation and Streamlining of Cost Estimation in the Construction Industry (English)
Abstract [en]

Introduction (and aim): Cost estimation is a critical component in construction projects, where efficient and accurate management of quantities and pricing data is essential for ensuring financial sustainability. As the construction industry undergoes digital transformation, tools such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Autodesk Revit have enabled the gradual replacement of traditional methods. This thesis aims to investigate current cost estimation practices, explore the potential formore efficient use of digital tools, and analyze the industry's readiness and limitations in relation to automation in cost estimation processes.Method: The study applies a mixed-methods approach, combining a literature review, qualitative interviews with industry professionals, and a case study in Autodesk Revit. The interviews provided empirical insights from CAD consultants, construction contractors, and cost engineers. The case study focused on developing a workflow to explore how integration between an external database and Revit could support automated cost estimation. Results: The results indicate that traditional methods still play a major role in cost estimation due to insufficient data quality in 3D models and a lack of standardized modeling practices. While digital tools have significant potential to support automation, this potential is hindered by gaps in standardization and technical competence.Analysis: The analysis shows that the industry's digital maturity remains limited, as manual quantity takeoff methods continue to dominate. However, automation within cost estimation is feasible if supported by improved standardization practices, particularly through implementation of LOD (Level of Development) and LOIN (Level of Information Need) in the design process.Discussion: The findings confirm that digital tools hold great potential for improving the efficiency and reliability of cost estimation in construction. Nevertheless, further research into workflow development and industry-wide standardization is needed, alongside training initiatives to increase digital competence across the sector.

Keywords: Cost estimation, quantity takeoff, BIM, IFC, Revit, automation, digitalization, LOD, LOIN.
