Abstract [en]

Earnings Management, a phenomenon where firms use accounting tools to shape financial reports in a desirable way for the firm. This phenomenon can be used by firms to reshape reality in order to draw benefit. Previous theories acknowledge the phenomenon and even suggest that firms may practice earnings management in order to avoid political scrutiny. The suggestions from previous theories sheds light to the question, whether or not the political landscape influences the amount of earnings management activities among firms. The purpose of the study is to provide clarity on whether or not the political landscape influences firms to engage in earnings management. Specifically, it aims to explore the extent to which changes in political leadership, or regulatory environments may create incentives or pressures for firms to manipulate financial reporting. By examining these potential connections, the study seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of how external, non-market forces can shape corporate behaviour and financial decision-making. The study applies a deductive quantitative approach. The data extracted consisting of financial reports, is evaluated through the Modified Jones Model, a well renowned method of detecting accruals earnings management The findings challenge the assumptions of Positive Accounting Theory and highlight that corporate financial behaviour is shaped by a broader mix of organizational, industry, and market factors.
