Correlation between surface colours and coloured light for an enhanced design process – An experimental study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

As colored light becomes increasingly common in design and architecture, there is agrowing need to understand how it interacts with physical surface colors. This studyinvestigates how white surfaces illuminated with colored light are perceived incomparison to colored surfaces illuminated with white light, aiming to support a moreconscious use of RGBW lighting in design processes. The study is based on threeresearch questions addressing the physical and perceptual differences between thesescenarios, as well as how designers can relate to color coding systems for light andsurface.

The method was based on a classical experiment conducted in a controlledenvironment, where three painted boxes were compared to a white box illuminated withcolored light. Empirical data were collected through physical measurements(luminance, spectral distribution, illuminance) and observations from 25 participantswho assessed color, brightness, and clarity in three different scenarios.

The results show that participants had difficulty distinguishing between painted andlight-colored boxes, suggesting that colored light can visually mimic painted surfaces. Statistically significant differences were mainly found in perceived brightness, wherepainted boxes were often perceived as brighter. Spectral measurements revealed thatcolored light typically has a narrower spectral range than white light, which mayinfluence color perception.

The analysis indicates that the uniformity and spectral properties of light affect howcolor is perceived, but subjective factors such as individual color vision and contextalso play a role. The study demonstrates the potential of using colored light as a flexibleand sustainable alternative to physical painting, especially in environments whererepainting is impractical or costly. The discussion highlights that although RGB and NCS are based on different colormixing principles, there are tendencies toward visual similarities that can be utilized indesign. The study shows that colored light can create visual expressions equivalent topainted surfaces, opening new possibilities in design. At the same time, the need forfurther research is identified where exploring more colors, light levels, and user groupsis of importance to deepen understanding and broaden applicability. As well as the development of educational tools that can translate between color systems for light andsurface.
