This paper looks into how cultural, political and economic factors have shaped the Nordic commercial radio industry. The first section contains a more detailed description of the policing and economic development of the radio industry in Sweden, while the second section makes a comparative overview of the situation for commercial radio in Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway. The paper is concluded with a summary of impressions and lessons to be learned from the deregulation of the Nordic radio markets.
