Abstract [en]
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if growth in the tourism sector is influenced by a diversified landscape in rural areas of Sweden. If it exists a positive relationship between tourism and a varied landscape, the importance of a diversified landscape in rural areas as a basis of economic growth may be strengthened and the significance of maintaining and protecting a diversified landscape may be reinforced. The main factor taken into consideration when investigating this relationship is the degree of diversification; which is measured through an entropy measurement of landscape diversity in each municipality in Sweden. The entropy measurement is calculated by including the degree of diversification of the five landscape segments; arable land, permanent grassland & meadow, forest, waterscape and built up land. Then, the measurement is multiplied with a dummy for rural areas as to examine the effect on the number of workplaces in the Swedish tourism sector. The findings of the regression analysis indicate that there exists a positive effect of a diversified landscape on the rural countryside.
